In the example above, the wind is coming from the North. The destination is 10 nautical miles away, straight into the wind. While the Current Route (dark blue line) looks more direct, it will take 5 hours and 18 minutes heading upwind. The Optimal Route (light blue line) is 2 nautical miles farther but with a tacking time over 3 hours faster!

Example

SailTimer will give you the optimal tacking angles if you input two simple things: the direction of the wind and of your destination.

If you also enter your boat length, the software will display your "hullspeed", the boat's maximum speed (unless planing).

If the straight-line distance along the rhumb line to your destination is also provided, the software will then give you the speed, distance and Tacking Time to Destination (TTD), for both your Current Course and the Optimal Course.
