Human vision
makes motion detection, depth perception and recognizing seem deceptively
simple. When you use Hologram with your web cam, it needs to accomodate
your room lighting, camera frame rate, and perhaps the fact that
you are sitting in front of a beige wall wearing a beige sweater.
You are asking that little camera to do something very sophisticated.
So for good performance you'll need to pay some attention to configuration
settings. Here are some common questions that may help to optimize
your performance.
Q. How do
I start the program?
A. Activate
Hologram before you start a 3D game or virtual tour. Then use a
hot-key to toggle it on and off as needed.
Q.
What kind of room lighting do I need?
A. You just need contrast between yourself and the background.
Q. What
kind of movement is Hologram designed for?
Hologram is designed to control the viewpoint. It was not really
meant to control high-speed navigation. You will usually have better
results driving a racing car with the keyboard and looking around
in Hologram, rather than vice versa. But Hologram is a powerful
tool that can be used with many different kinds of games, so you
may be the first to find a great new configuration.
Q. Is there
a Mac version?
A. Sorry, this version of the program is Windows only for now. But
if you are a developer, we are always interested in discussing Mac
OSX (and Linux) versions.
Q. What
if I wave my hand back and forth in a blur?
A. Hologram will adapt to whatever frame rate your camera and computer
can produce. However, the software would have trouble following
a blur. Turn on the Active Pixels (red dots) in the Advanced panel
if you want to ensure that the program is defining you well.
Q. Are custom
versions of Hologram possible to display my company's brand?
A. If your company makes software, 3D games or virtual tours, we
may be able to include your brand in the interface for a certain
period. Then when your customers use Hologram with any 3D or VR
content, they'll see your corporate ID.
Q. What
are the system requirements?
Hologram will work with a range of computers that display different
types of VR and 3D, and at a variety of web cam frame rates. However,
best performance when using Hologram with demanding 3D games and
VR scenes, can be achieved with at least a Pentium 3 with 8 MB video
ram and 256 MB ram. If your computer supports high-end 3D games
though, it will have no problem running Hologram. A recent version
of Direct X is also required (e.g., Version 9).
Q. How can
I obtain the best settings for my favorite 3D game?
A. Some games have a tutorial where you can practice navigating.
That is a good place to see whether you can control the game better
with keyboard or mouse emulation, and try changing game controls.
Try your own settings, or see if we have
any listed for your game. When you find some good ones, share.
And soon you'll progress to a whole new level of immersive experience.
Q. What
about cheats and easter eggs?
A. In response to user requests for a method of producing rapid
button clicks in certain game contests, there is one hidden control
in Hologram...
